Description
What is Vaginal Discharge?
Vaginal discharge is a clear or whitish fluid that comes out of your vagina. Discharge is normal, that keeps the vagina clean and moist, and protects it from infection.
Vaginal discharge is not usually anything to worry about if it:
• Does not have a strong or unpleasant smell
• Is clear or white
• Is thick and sticky
• Is slippery and wet
When vaginal discharge can be a sign of an infection?
If your discharge changes – for example, in smell, color or texture – it might be a sign of an infection.
Discharge | Possible Cause |
Smells fishy | Bacterial vaginosis |
Thick and white, like cottage cheese | Thrush |
Green, yellow, or frothy | Trichomoniasis |
With pelvic pain or bleeding | Chlamydia or gonorrhea |
With blisters or sores | Genital herpes |
• Many women suffer from vaginal discharge, often associated with a disturbance of the normal vaginal environment, including a change in the vagina’s normal level of acidity.
• The normal pH of the vagina is acidic, fluctuating between 3.8 – 4.5, discouraging infection from occurring.
• The acidic environment is created by the presence of Lactic acid, which is the byproduct of the glycogen metabolism by normal – existing bacteria.
• Alteration in pH disturbs the fragile balance of the vagina, causes reduction in the number of lactic acid bacteria and sets up an environment conductive to inflammation called Vaginitis.
• If pH balance is disturbed, one can end up with painful conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and yeast infections. Some of these infections, particularly UTIs, can become quite acutely severe.
Menstruation Can Alter the pH Level of Intimate Area
What is Menstruation?
Menstruation is a woman’s monthly bleeding. Most menstrual period last from 3 to 5 days.
Blood has a pH of 7.4. Therefore blood paired with hormonal changes raise your intimate area’s pH.
Some medical conditions, such as “pregnancy & diabetes” may trigger an infection in the intimate area. Antibiotics are also known to encourage bacterial growth by making your intimate area’s environment less acidic.
